Know before You Go

When I moved to Portland from Indianapolis a year ago, my primary concern about the 2,260- mile drive was whether or not I picked the right audio book. Fortunately, I made it to Portland unscathed. Today, I am going to follow the advice of the Red Cross.

Prepare for the Unexpected (a shortened Red Cross list):
  • Carry a Disaster Supplies Kit in your trunk.
  • Let someone know your destination, your route, and when you expect to arrive.
  • Find out what disasters may occur in the place where you are traveling.
  • Pay attention to the weather forecast for your destination.
  • Don’t let your vehicle’s gas tank get too low.
  • If you are taking your pet with you, there are special things you should know
  • Map(s) of the area

To understand my risks, I called the forest ranger nearest the cabin who said the road conditions were “excellent.” To stay informed of other risks, I have the Red Cross apps on my phone, which will alert me of any natural disaster in my area. The University of Oregon’s list of hazards also has some good information on major risks.

If you have travel plans this weekend, stay safe and consider taking advantage of free Red Cross resources. If you're looking for something to do, consider making (or updating) your disaster plan. And if you don't want to leave the couch, the Red Cross apps are actually a lot of fun to play with.
